We developed this community project in partnership with musician Kaori Bell for British Science Week. We wanted to give young people the opportunity to play with technology and produce a sound map of their local area.
We worked with a youth group who ventured out and recorded the sounds of their local environment, such as the check-outs in the shops, trains at station, even the parrot in the pet shop. These sounds were then linked with circuits and incorporated into a touch-sensitive map.
“This session has been fun because we learnt about circuits, electrics and music.” (young person)
The project was a great way for the youth group to connect with their local community and develop their skills in pulling together resources to create something new. The project was funded through a British Science Association grant and can easily be run again with other groups and locations.
